"We have
always believed that a clear vision, quiet
determination and personal attention to our
clients would enable us to create an
extraordinary Law Firm."
When Katy Kurtz founded Kurtz &
Peckham with fellow Colorado native, Mary
Peckham in 1979 she had a vision of a small
Firm, well run by people dedicated to serving
their clients and committed to making a
difference in people's lives. Although nearly a
quarter of a century has passed and the Firm has
doubled in size this vision has never changed.
Katy Kurtz became a lawyer
because she believed she could help people and
she believed that women had an important role to
play in the legal profession. Those beliefs are
as strong today as they were in 1979. Throughout
the intervening years Katy's unique perspective
and creative, perseverant approach have served
her clients well. Katy takes pride in providing
personalized, traditional and non-traditional
legal services, customized to address each of
her client's individual circumstances.
Katy's practice, centrally
located on the 16th street Mall in downtown
Denver, where it has been since its conception,
encompasses the Metropolitan area including
Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, Adams, Boulder and
Douglas counties. Under special circumstances
Katy has represented people in the mountain
communities and the eastern plains of the state,
as well as out of state residents with legal
issues in the Metropolitan area.
Katy attended Stanford
University from 1969-1972, then returned to
Colorado to finish up her undergraduate degree.
Katy graduated from the University of Denver
College of Law in 1978. During law school she
taught tennis, worked for the National Lawyer's
Guild locally and represented indigent clients
through the student practice program.
Katy is admitted to practice
in all state courts in Colorado and the United
States District Court for the District of
Colorado. Her practice is focused on all areas
of family law, wills, trusts and estates, and
other probate matters, and representation of
nurses and pharmacists in disputes with their
licensing boards.
Katy and Kurtz & Peckham have
an A-V rating with Martindale-Hubbell. An A
rating means very high to pre-eminent, the V
rating means the ethics are exemplary.
Martindale Hubbel ratings are achieved by M-H
requesting confidential opinions from other
attorneys in the area, and is the guide source
lawyers turn to when referring clients to
lawyers out of state.
Katy is a member of the
Colorado Bar Association, the Denver Bar
Association, the Women's Bar and the Colorado
Collaborative Family Law Professionals. She is
committed to expanding and exploring Alternative
Dispute Resolution opportunities for her
clients. She is a member of the Rocky Mountain
Collaborative Law Professionals, a group of
attorney's, mediators, therapists, and financial
professionals who meet regularly to further
explore the collaborative process in family law
matters.
A fourth generation Colorado Native, Katy is
politically active in her state and is involved
in efforts to get women elected to the U.S.
Senate and state governorships. She also mentors
young girls in Denver Kids (for children at risk
for graduation from high school). She has been a
member of Denver Rotary and is active in her
church. Katy spends her free time with her niece
and nephews as well as her large, lovable basset
hound, Clarence.
When asked what she finds most
rewarding about her career in the law, Katy
answered, "Beating the odds and founding the
oldest all women-owned Law Partnership in
Denver, and hearing from people that I have
represented, years later, thanking us for how we
helped them in a time of need".
